So the downloading, the theory is that with a normal P2P peer-to-peer like limewire, you share files and someone downloads an entire file from one source. With torrents you go to a website (there are tons, and although I don't care for them, you should look on wikipedia for piratebay.org and read about them buying Sealand, its this tiny "country" off the English coast.) Anyway... So I go to Torrent Portal here - http://www.torrentportal.com/account-login.php I have a login, its free to have one, but you don't have to use it. search for a "torrent" - by the way, wikipedia has a great explanation of this, if you go there and just look up "torrents" - and then refine your search - here is an example - http://www.torrentportal.com/torrents-search.php?search=there+will+be+blood -- here i typed in -there will be blood- and hit "search" now you will find all kinds of crap - this site is good because they don't like adult torrents here - not that there is anything wrong with a nasty movie once in a while - but some are just rediculous with the porn so use the drop down for "Search Type" and change from any word to "All words" and check the "hide unseeded" button (I will explain in a bit.Advanced Torrent Search Search For: Sort By: Date AddedFilenameSeedersLeechersSizeRating DescendingAscendingSearch Type: Any Word (OR) All Words (AND) Size:From to (mb)Category: (all categories)GamesMoviesTVVideosAppsAnimeAudioComicsUnsortedPorn Hide Unseeded: Hide Non-User Uploads: Exclude Words: (seperate words with a space)
so it will look like this: Advanced Torrent SearchSearch For: Sort By: Date AddedFilenameSeedersLeechersSizeRating DescendingAscendingSearch Type: Any Word (OR) All Words (AND) Size:From to (mb)Category: (all categories)GamesMoviesTVVideosAppsAnimeAudioComicsUnsortedPorn Hide Unseeded: Hide Non-User Uploads: Exclude Words: (seperate words with a space)
this will greatly reduce your having to look through a bunch of crap. sort by changes the way they are sorted - seeders means people who are "sharing" the file and leechers means how many are downloading it. I usually play around with this depending on the kind of file I am looking for. For example if you want a brand new movie, date added is good because people will post crap. Some viruses/trojans but your antivirus software should be fine, if not you can download Avast from here and its killer! Seeders is good because the more seeders the more chance you have of getting an entire file, quickly. Leechers, on the other hand, is helpful because you can go off what all the other people have been reccomended - its a "use your best judgement" and learn as you go type thing. Size is good if you are looking for something large (ie. you can download ALL the Simpsons - its 40-something gigabytes, and might take a week, but you can) like if you want 'all' the Neal Yong songs/records ever made or all the beatles or all the sopranos, whatever. Now stop here and download bitcomet. Its the best, I think. There are others but its good and reliable and safe. http://www.bitcomet.com/doc/download.htm its 100% legit freeware and its very, very popular. Install Bitcomet - its pretty slick. Now when you are at torrentportal.com - and find a song/movie/tv show that you want you will see something like the image I attached to this email this movie is a tough one, so its a good example, a lot of stuff you'll have no problem finding a perfect file/collection right off - but I highlighted the one in pink because I wanted to explain. if there is a red "X" next to it don't download it. It's probably just something fake (there are a lot of, apparently, bored nerds out there) but might be a virus or something. again, don't get too concerned because if you have antivirus software running it will catch any file, even if its embedded and still in the process of downlaoding, and quaratine it) look for the ones that have the green check mark and/or are green hightlighted. You can click on the little symbol (page with a green arrow on the left - to the left fo the file name) and the first time you may have to right-click and choose "Download with bitcomet" if you click on the file name it will take you to the page of the file, where you can also download it, but that's more for if you want to see people's comments. An example is, if you're wondering "this movie's not even out in theaters yet and here it is for downloading" which does happen but its rare, you might want to read the comments because someone may be saying "yeah its a screener - its real" or "this is BS" So you start downloading. Some files go fast. Some are dog-ass slow. Sometimes it can take a couple of days if its something big. I've gotten collections, like the Sopranos and all the Beatles and all the Pink Floyd and what not and its taken a while, but if they are seeded (meaning if someone, at some time, uploaded the whole thing) then it will eventually complete. This is a lot, I know, and it may seem really befuddled, but play around with it. Its fun. You can get TV shows (both recent, if you miss something) and old, movies, songs, entire collections, games, programs, all kinds of stuff. Some good things to have if you're going to be getting into it (All freeware, all legit) are: DIVX movie player- my favorite, if the file will work (it likes .avi files) is here: http://www.divx.com/ Winamp is awesome for MP3s - i dig the 'visualization' thingy- http://www.winamp.com/ VLC media player is clunky, not pretty, but plays EVERY kind of file http://www.download.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.html winrar is here: http://www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-2250-10007677.html?part=dl-winrar&subj=dl&tag=button it will extract .rar and zipped files.
